Books On Playing Chess
- Unbeatable Chess Lessons for Juniors
~Usually Ships Within 24 Hours
- -Robert M. Snyder / Paperback 272 pages / Published November 2003
This excellent book is very comprehensive and the writing style is exceptionally clear and very easy to understand. The author,
one of America's most successful chess trainers for young players, having taught chess for over 30 years, has taken 24
selected games used in his lessons and turned the games into lessons themselves.
Some of the topics covered include; taking advantage of weak opening play, planning ahead setting up a transition from
the late opening to a winning endgame, taking advantage of White (or Black) square weaknesses around a castled King,
building up a Kingside Attack, opening up lines against the Castled King, taking advantage of an unsound sacrifice,
sacrificing material for long term positional pressure, sacrificing on 'f6' and 'f7' against
the castled King, learning to use the correct Rook along the 1st rank, building a strong Pawn Center,
taking advantage of weak pawns, getting the most out of the Bishop Pair, plus detailed analysis and important
opening lines througout all of the games.

- Chess Openings: Traps and Zaps
~Usually Ships Within 24 Hours
- -Bruce Pandolfini / Paperback 256 pages / Published April 1989
In this first complete instructional book ever written on chess openings, the author, a National Master, teaches players how to take charge of the game's crucial opening phase. In this book, the author uses his unique "crime and punishment" approach to provideing clear explanations, instructions, practical analyses, and much more. The book proves more than 200 short "opening moves" typical of average players, which are arranged according to the classical opening variations and by level of difficulty.
Of the three traditional phases of chess play-the opening, the middle-game and the endgame, the opening is very important. Many openings are not completed successfully, partly because until now most opening instructions have consisted of tables of tournament level moves that offer no explanations for the reasons behind them. Consequently, these classical opening patterns can serve as little more than references to the average player. Also included are a glossary of openings that lists all the classical "textbook" variations for comparison and reference and a tactical index.

- Birth of the Chess Queen: A History
~Usually Ships Within 24 Hours
- -Marilyn Yalom / Hardcover 304 Pages / Published April 2004
Everyone knows that the queen is the most powerful piece in chess, but few people know that the game existed for five hundred years without her. In India, Persia, and the Arab lands, where the game was first played, a general, or vizier (chief counselor to the king), occupied the square where the queen now stands. Not until the year 1000, two hundred years after Arab conquerors brought chess to southern Europe, did a chess queen appear on the board. Initially she was the weakest piece, moving only one square at a time on the diagonal, yet by 1497, during the reign of Isabella of Castile, the chess queen had become the formidable force she is today.
examines how and why did this transformation took place during the five-hundred-year period between the chess queen's timid emergence and her elevation into the game's mightiest piece. traces their origin and spread from Spain, Italy, Germany, France, and England to Scandinavia and Russia. In a lively and engaging narrative, Yalom draws parallels between the birth of the chess queen and the ascent of female sovereigns in Europe.

- Chess Fundamentals
~Usually Ships Within 24 Hours
- -Jose Raul Capablanca / Paperback 144 pages / Published October 1994
Text, photographs, and diagrams outline the essentials of chess, including basic moves, openings, and game strategies.
FROM THE PUBLISHER
J.R. Capablanca was a World Chess Champion and one of the greatest players in chess history, yet he wrote very little
about the game.
Chess Fundamentals, though normally for the beginning player, contains valuable insights that will benefit players at
all levels of understanding, including masters. Capablanca explains:
·How to obtain and nurture a passed pawn
·How to get and keep the initiative
·Cardinal rules for rook and pawn endings
·How to attack using knight as the main force
·How to cut off enemy pieces
Chess Fundamentals is one of the jewels of chess literature.
This book is a classic. Every serious player should be familiar with each and every concept it covers.
The best sections, in my opinion, are 'Two Rooks and Pawns' and 'A Player's Motives Analyzed in a Specimen

- Reassess Your Chess Workbook
~Usually Ships Within 24 Hours
- -Jeremy Silman / Paperback 425 pages / Published May 2001
This large workbook is a stand-alone companion to How to Reassess Your Chess. The author provides 131 problems designed
to test a player's strengths and weaknesses. These problems cover openings, middlegames (both positional and tactical) and endgames.
A detailed answer is provided for each of these problems.
Through this process of problem solving, analysis and advice, a player is led to discover the major flaws embedded in their playing.
Through this same process, a player is also led to an understanding of Mr. Silman's system of thinking about the game and how it differs
from many other popular systems of chess thinking. This workbook may be utilized with or without Silman's earlier book How to Reassess Your Chess.
It may be used in the workbook fashion described above, or its section devoted to answers may be read as an instruction manual in itself.
